4Cs: How to Shop for a Diamond Engagement Ring

Popping the big question soon? If you are and you still don’t have an engagement ring at hand, you might as well start looking for the best one out there to make sure she says yes.

Before you go to the diamond ring store though, it pays to know how to choose the best diamond. Start by learning the four Cs of diamond, namely cut, clarity, color, and carat weight. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Cut

Cut is one of the biggest things to look into when choosing a diamond. This aspect does not only pertain to the gem’s actual shape but also the level of its brilliance. The cut of a diamond actually has an effect to its reflective properties. This makes a gem’s cut a big factor in setting its grade and price. Many jewelry stores have a special collection of diamonds with the “ideal cut.” Ask the jeweler about them and pick according to your budget.

Clarity

A diamond’s clarity is based on its purity. According to Ornate Jewels, clarity refers to how much impurities are present in the gem and how visible they are. The highest grade of clarity is F (flawless), which means the diamond has zero impurities. Grade F diamonds, however, are very rare so if you want one, you would have to spend quite big. Other clarity grades include IF (internally flawless), VVS1-VVS2 (very very slightly included), VS1-VS2 (very slightly included), and SI1-SI2 (slightly included).

Color

Color means the presence or absence of color in the diamond. Colorless diamonds are more popular because they shine brighter than colored ones. The whiter a diamond is, the higher its grade is.

Carat

Carat is the unit used to measure a diamond’s weight. It is different from “karat,” which is the measure of gold’s purity. A carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams or 200 milligrams. Always ask the jeweler about a diamond’s carat.

The four Cs might sound as complex as the long history of diamond engagement rings, but if you keep these things mind, it is easier to find the best diamond ring for your future wife.
